Hospira’s iSecure™ syringe won the 11th Annual Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA)/Plastics News Design award, as well as the medical category award in the International Plastics Design Competition (IPDC). The IPDC is the first plastics competition to be international in scope and open to a full range of applicants from every industry sector, ranging from appliance and automotive components to consumer products, medical devices and packaging. The VisIV™ container has won a bronze International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the "Medical & Scientific Products" category. The IDEA program is co-sponsored by BusinessWeek and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). The awards celebrate the best product designs of the year in a variety of product categories, to help foster business and public understanding of the impact of industrial design excellence on the quality of life and the economy. Chris Begley, Hospira's former chief executive officer and current executive chairman, was named one of the 100 Most Inspiring People in the Life-Sciences Industry by the readers of PharmaVoice. This premier award recognizes products with groundbreaking innovations that are helping change the face of healthcare. The winning products are judged to excel in product innovation, design and engineering achievement, end-user benefit, and cost effectiveness. MDEA characterized the award winners for excellence in both outward design and software or system integration designed to ensure safety or reduce errors. (April 2007)
The Symbiq™ infusion system received the 2006 User-Centered Product Design Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). The award recognizes innovative, user-centered approaches to human-factors design. Human factors, or ergonomics, is the science of applying theory, principles, data and other design methods to optimize human usability and overall system performance. In a recent report on enhancing patient safety, the Institute of Medicine recommended incorporating human-factors design into device development to help decrease medication errors and enhance interaction between clinicians and technology. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of the largest advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) Americans, has recognized Hospira in its 2011 Corporate Equality Index and Best Places to Work Survey. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Hospira was named "One of the Best Places to Work for GLBT Equality." (September 2010)
Hospira was recognized in the Top 100 in Newsweek’s 2009 and 2010 Green Rankings, a data-driven assessment of the largest companies in the U.S. and in the world, quantifying the actual environmental footprints, policies, and reputations of these big businesses.
In 2007 Hospira received the Most Valuable Pollution Prevention (MVP2) award, a recognition of excellence for its VisIV™ container for intravenous (I.V.) medications and solutions. The MVP2 award recognizes creative and effective ways to significantly reduce pollution. The next-generation container results in approximately 40-70 percent less waste than other large-volume flexible I.V. bags. The Washington, D.C.-based National Pollution Prevention Roundtable presented the award as part of its annual Pollution Prevention Week. The Roundtable is the largest membership organization in the United States devoted solely to pollution prevention. (September 2007)
