Hospira and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) are pleased to continue the tradition of the Stanley Serlick Award for Safe Practices in Parenteral Nutrition. The award is presented annually to
individuals or programs that promote safe practices in parenteral nutrition.
The second annual award will be presented during Nutrition Week in January 2008 in Chicago.
Stanley Serlick, R.Ph. (1937-2005), is renowned as the first parenteral nutrition pharmacist. With Dr. Stanley Dudrick at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, he developed formulations that sustained beagle puppies for months at a time. Compared to their littermates the intravenously fed puppies had greater weight gain and were similar in skeletal growth, development and activity.
This pioneering research led to developments in amino acids, lipids and catheters that enable even the smallest neonate weighing less than a pound to be fed adequate nutrition.
For almost 25 years, Stanley worked for Abbott Laboratories' Hospital Products Division. Among his many accomplishments were directing pilot manufacturing operations and launching the global pharmaceutical services business (now One 2 One®). He was a
mentor to numerous research and development personnel and before retirement in January, 1998 became active in pharmacy school lecturing.
